What is consulting?

Someone once told me consultants offer services to business. These services may be as easy as a referral or training. People actually get paid for introducing two strangers. Wow. I am currently beginning in the consulting (the getting paid part). I have been introducing strangers for 30 years now... hopefully I can make it profitable.
